In April 2025, Phoebe Schreiner, Executive Director of Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship (CADE), presented “The Empire State Foodshed: A New Vision" at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's conference on the regional food system. In this talk, Schreiner outlines why New York and the Northeast will play a critical role in the future of American food production. As climate change reshapes agricultural regions across the United States, the Northeast’s water resources, proximity to major population centers, and network of small and mid-sized farms position the region as a vital foodshed for the decades ahead. She also explores key challenges facing New York agriculture — including land access, aging farmers, and the pressures on small and mid-sized farms — and highlights opportunities for investors, policymakers, and institutions to strengthen a more resilient regional food system. Topics covered: Climate change and shifting U.S. agricultural geography Why the Northeast is uniquely positioned for future food production The role of small and mid-sized farms in New York Land access and the next generation of farmers Opportunities for public/ private investment in regional food systems About CADE: The Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship works to build a vibrant and resilient food system in New York by supporting farm and food businesses, strengthening markets, and expanding opportunities for beginning farmers.
