Sunsoft's follow up to Galaxy Fight used the NEOGEO arcade hardware, this is a full one credit clear playthrough / longplay / trueplay as the cuddly monster Marurun. A bright, bold and humorous fighting game with lots of easy to learn moves and overpowered super attacks. The name was a play on the number of revisions and sequels games like street fighter got. A very underrated fighter and one any serious fighting fan should have in their collection, the Saturn version also requires the 1MB RAM cartridge in order to run. Now until 2008, the Saturn port was the only home version of the game, it was supposedly based on a cancelled NEOGEO CD version, which perhaps might explain why the port isn't as good as it should have been. If you like the game we would recommend the PlayStation 2 Sunsoft Collection version or the recent Nintendo Switch download release. As while the Saturn version does have an awesome arranged soundtrack and a huge range of options to unlock, you can also play as both the bosses in two player mode and the game uses the Saturn internal clock to show monthly artwork. NEOGEO ports on the Saturn always seemed a bit nerfed and as a result Waku Waku 7 on Saturn is packed full of loading screens. The game loads, between, after and before every round and that's not mentioning the slowdown. Which isn't too much of a problem till you fight Dandy-J and Arina who's background characters seem to be the cause of the problem. Oh and Fernandeath the final boss causes the frame rate to drop by close to half and don't even think about a mirror match with him in versus mode as it is super ssllloooowwww moootttiionnnn. To top that off the background has a dynamic scaling feature in the arcade version, which this version includes. However, for the Saturn version it only uses the wide background art, so while the background is fine when the characters are far apart, when up close get ready for some seriously pixelated art. Interestingly one of the secret option removes the scaling and sets the background to the largest, this also removes a lot of the slowdown. So Sunsoft were aware of the issue it would seem and they tried to fix it best they could, the fighting game Rabbit on Saturn also had the same problem and a similar fix for the issue. Despite being a great fighter these days it's hard to recommend the Saturn port, unless you don't own any other format to play the game on. In which case pick it up as long as you don't mind the issues we raised. Astra Superstars was a sort of follow up from Sunsoft to both Galaxy Fight and Waku Waku 7. These days you are best off getting the ACA NEO GEO version which is a direct arcade port only minus the arranged soundtrack on Switch, Xbox and PlayStation. Also known as: わくわく7 (Japan) Release: 1997 Developer: Sunsoft Publisher: Sunsoft / サンソフ Format: Sega Saturn (SS) / セガサターン Waku Waku 7 is also available on NEOGEO, Nintendo Switch and is included in the Sunsoft Collection on PlayStation 2 along with Galaxy Fight. The arcade version is now available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One & Series S/X along with PlayStation 4 & 5 via ACA NEO GEO.
