#trains #travel #railways I decided to do something a bit mad, a bit crazy, against the norm. Instead of just simply flying back to Bangkok after seeing a concert in Singapore, I decided to travel back via train instead. Well, actually on 5 of them in total, covering a distance of around 2000km over 2 days. My video starts at a railway station in Singapore called Bukit Timah. However, trains haven’t actually departed from this station since 2011! It was once on the North-South Line that ran between the terminus station called Tanjong Pagar, past here and on to the current Woodlands Train Checkpoint Station. The station area has been renovated and conserved with the old railway line turned into the Rail Corridor – a 24km long walking and cycling greenway. After taking bus 170 from the old Bukit Timah Station to Woodlands Train Checkpoint Station, my first train of the trip was the short 5-minute ride on the Singapore to Johor Bahru shuttle. Details of this train are here: Train No.1: Shuttle Tebrau Train 80 leaves Woodlands at 13:45 and arrives at JB Sentral at 13:50. There are a number of trains that run over the border between Singapore and Johor Bahru in Malaysia each day but it’s a very popular route and tickets sell out very quickly so it’s wise to book well in advance. When you book online, you will have to enter your passport number. Before you board the train, a member of staff will scan your passport picture page which then cross-references your ticket. You will then be allowed to proceed through both Singapore and Malaysia immigration checks before boarding the train. To book tickets, visit the KTMB website here: https://shuttleonline.ktmb.com.my/Hom... After arriving at JB Sentral, my next train took me to my overnight stop in Gemas, Malaysia. Details of this train are here: Train No.2: Intercity Express Train 44 leaves JB Sentral at 14:40 and arrives at Gemas at 19:06. To book tickets, visit the KTMB website here: https://online.ktmb.com.my/ The following morning, I took the following train from Gemas all the way to the Thai border at Padang Besar. Details of this train are here: Train No.3: ETS Gold Train 9420 leaves Gemas at 08:12 and arrives at Padang Besar at 16:18 (Malaysian Time/15:18 Thai Time). Upon arrival at Padang Besar, follow the signs for Tickets by heading upstairs and purchase a ticket for the next train – a shuttle that runs between the border to Hat Yai. Tickets can only be purchased on the same day of travel from an hour before departure meaning that they can’t be purchased online in advance. After purchasing your ticket, you will then be allowed to proceed through both Malaysia and Thailand immigration checks before boarding the train. Details of this train are here: Train No.4: Thai Express Train 950 leaves Padang Besar at 15:40 (Thai Time) and arrives at Hat Yai at 16:25. NOTE: It seems that this train leaves late in order to wait for people to pass through the immigration checks. My train left at 16:30 and arrived into Hat Yai at 17:15. An alternative to this train is Special Express 46 that leaves Padang Besar at 17:00 and arrives at Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat at 09:05. However, I decided to take my 5th and final train from Hat Yai as it features the newer Chinese sleeper carriages. Details of this train are here: Train No.5: Special Express CNR 32 leaves Hat Yai at 17:45 and arrives at Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat at 08:10.
