It is difficult to overestimate the effect on Okinawan music that the Boom’s number one, 1.5 million selling single ‘Shima Uta’ had in 1993. Although interest in Okinawan music had swelled on the mainland from the end of 1980s, it was the Boom that brought the sanshin and Okinawan influenced music to the masses. It's since become one of Japan and Okinawa's best known songs, and has been covered by artists both in Japan and around the world. This footage is of the The Boom performing in 1995 on a short-lived NHK programme called Asia Live, which was simultaneously broadcast in other Asian countries.
