Collapsing Categories Concept & SPSS

Collapsing categories refers to reducing the number of categories in a variable. This may be necessary for a number of reasons: to create more meaningful categories, remove categories that are unnecessary and obscure the data, etc. I often use this when I get data that someone else that was not collected in an ideal way. WARNING: This should be thoughtfully assessed to ensure you are not manipulating the data in an unethical way (no p-hacking!). This process should fit your research question, your data collection plan, and honor the story of your data and participants.
