What’s behind all the recent headlines claiming blue whales are “going silent”? Are they really vanishing—or is the story more nuanced than it's being presented? In this video, I dig into the latest acoustic study from Monterey Bay, showing a nearly 40% drop in blue whale vocalizations during the 2015–2021 marine heatwave known as “The Blob,” which disrupted krill populations and marine food webs. But this study reflects just one corner of the ocean—and the full story might be very different elsewhere. Through my own years of whale-watching off San Diego (2018–2025), I’ve seen blue whales remain numerous and active, if not always thriving. These observations reveal regional complexity that headlines often miss. To come see blue whales with me in San Diego please visit www.gonewhalewatching.com
