Raag Shyam Kalyan is a serene and expansive evening raga, deeply rooted in the Kalyan ang. It carries within it a luminous blend of devotion, romantic longing, and contemplative peace. The raga unfolds with a gentle yet majestic temperament, where the teevra Madhyam shines like a guiding light, creating an atmosphere of introspection and emotional depth. Shyam Kalyan is often associated with the quiet stillness of twilight—when the day dissolves into night and the mind naturally turns inward. In this presentation, Raag Shyam Kalyan is explored through a traditional khayal format, allowing the raga to gradually bloom through vilambit and drut compositions. The alap and vistar emphasize the raga’s graceful meend, fluid phrasing, and nuanced ornamentation, highlighting its meditative and introspective nature. The Bada Khayal, “Beet Gaye Shyam”, is a profound composition by Sumitra Guha, a Padmashree awardee and an eminent torchbearer of the Hindustani classical tradition. This composition reflects viraha (separation) and longing, where time itself becomes a witness to emotional yearning. Rendered in vilambit laya, it provides ample space for melodic elaboration, subtle improvisation, and emotional expression, allowing the raga to unfold with depth and dignity. The Chota Khayal, “Neend Na Aawat”, is a traditional bandish that beautifully captures restlessness and inner turbulence. Set in a faster tempo, it contrasts the calm expansiveness of the bada khayal with rhythmic vitality and playful phrasing, showcasing the dynamic possibilities of Raag Shyam Kalyan. The presentation culminates in the Drut Bandish, “Chail Chabeela Saiya”, once again composed by Padmashree Vidhushi Sumitra Guha. This composition brings a vibrant, lively conclusion to the recital, infused with charm, rhythmic sparkle, and expressive taans. The drut bandish highlights the joyful and flirtatious side of the raga, balancing its otherwise introspective mood. This performance is rooted in the guru–shishya parampara, where compositions are not merely sung but lived, absorbed, and passed on with reverence and responsibility.
