The alap and vistar emphasize the raga’s graceful meend, fluid phrasing, and nuanced ornamentation, highlighting its meditative and introspective nature. The Bada Khayal, “Beet Gaye Shyam”, is a profound composition by Sumitra Guha, a Padmashree awardee and an eminent torchbearer of the Hindustani classical tradition. This composition reflects viraha (separation) and longing, where time itself becomes a witness to emotional yearning. Rendered in vilambit laya, it provides ample space for melodic elaboration, subtle improvisation, and emotional expression, allowing the raga to unfold with depth and dignity. The Chota Khayal, “Neend Na Aawat”, is a traditional bandish that beautifully captures restlessness and inner turbulence. The presentation culminates in the Drut Bandish, “Chail Chabeela Saiya”, once again composed by Padmashree Vidhushi Sumitra Guha.
