Here's something I haven't seen anyone try yet. You can fight the Time Eater almost entirely as either Sonic and most people just stick with modern. Classic Sonic can still beat the Time Eater. I don't really think he's supposed to though. The last hit in particular looks really underwhelming in 2D. If you're not going for the Can't Touch This achievement classic Sonic is a good choice since it's easier to gather rings as him. If you are planning to get the achievement though you're better off with modern. It's a lot harder to dodge the Time Eater's close range swipe and it can be hard to see which debris is harmless and which will hit you as classic Sonic.
