June Carter is smitten with Carl Smith during the short comedy skit (June and Carl would get married in less than 2 months after this show on July 9th 1952) The Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle perform "Too Old to Cut the Mustard" June sings lead, Maybelle, guitar, Anita bass fiddle, Becky Bowman, accordion. (Helen Carter who usually played accordion was home pregnant with her 2nd child Kenny) Then Anita Carter who just turned 19 in March sings a beautiful solo rendition of "Just When I Needed You" The Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle band were top stars at the Grand Ole Opry in 1952 and they were chosen to perform on the Kate Smith Evening hour in New York . There were 3 Kate Smith shows featuring stars of the Grand Ole Opry, March 26, April 23rd and May 21st in 1952. The Carters were the only Opry performers who were on all 3 shows. These 3 Kate Smith shows were the first shows that featured 'hillbilly or country music" on a national television broadcast on NBC. This national exposure helped put the Grand Ole Opry, the Ryman auditorium and Nashville on the map as a destination for vacationers and hillbilly music enthusiasts. The Carter Sisters had been hired by WSM and the Grand Ole Opry in 1950 and were the youngest members at the time. Carl Smith emcees, Moon Mulligan and Lonzo and Oscar performed on the show with the Carters. #Cartersisterscountrymusichalloffame
