So today we're going to be reviewing them beside an older version to see if Gordon & Macphail's quality is still holding up! Linkwood 15 Year – 2017 Bottling ($60 at 43% ABV) The earlier 43% ABV Linkwood 15 Year bottlings predate the current “Distillery Labels” lineup which began in 2017 and reflects a more classic presentation of this Speyside distillery’s spirit. Linkwood’s large stills and slow distillation give the whisky a clean, almost wine-like brightness, and in this older version, that elegance is preserved with a slightly gentler delivery. The nose is light yet complex, with crisp apple, apricot, honey, and a subtle herbal freshness, joined by hints of almonds and faint smoke. On the palate, soft sherry fruit meets vanilla, toffee, and a touch of white wine dryness, supported by light oak spice. The finish is graceful, with clove, toasted cereal, and a mild nuttiness. Compared to the newer 46% bottling, it is lighter in body and less oak-forward, letting Linkwood’s floral and orchard fruit signature shine through. It’s an understated but refined dram that captures the distillery’s house style in a more restrained form, and for those who prefer elegance over intensity. Linkwood 15 Year – 2023 “Distillery Labels” ($100 at 46% ABV) Part of Gordon & MacPhail’s newer “Distillery Labels” range, this Linkwood 15 Year combines traditional Speyside elegance with the independent bottler’s signature sherry maturation approach. Linkwood Distillery, founded in 1821 in Elgin, is known for producing a fragrant, floral spirit thanks to its large, pear-shaped copper pot stills with long necks that encourage plenty of reflux, creating a lighter, refined style. For this bottling, Gordon & MacPhail draws heavily on sherry casks, enhancing Linkwood’s delicate orchard-fruit character with richer layers. On the nose, the whisky greets with ripe summer berries, polished oak, and a touch of baking spice. The palate is smooth yet more assertive than earlier versions due to the higher bottling strength, offering cinnamon, clove, and toffee-laced malt. The finish lingers with soft charred oak and gentle dried fruit sweetness. It’s a well-balanced Speyside single malt that manages to be both delicate and robust, reflecting Linkwood’s distilling precision and G&M’s cask management. Mortlach 15 Year – 2023 “Distillery Labels” ($100 at 46% ABV) This Mortlach 15 Year from the “Distillery Labels” series showcases the rich, muscular side of Speyside whisky. Mortlach, founded in 1823 in Dufftown, is famous for its unusual “2.81 distillations” process - a complex partial triple-distillation method that results in a dense, meaty spirit often referred to as “The Beast of Dufftown.” In Gordon & MacPhail’s hands, that weighty spirit is tempered and enriched by long maturation in sherry casks, creating a layered, full-bodied dram. Aromas open with warm sherry notes, dried raisins, candied orange, and a faint malty sweetness, underscored by hints of leather and oak. On the palate, Mortlach’s trademark umami depth comes through - baked fruits, treacle (slightly sweeter syrup that’s less bitter than molasses), toasted nuts, and a gentle smoky char - balanced by a touch of citrus brightness. The finish is long, rich, and slightly dry, with oak tannins and lingering spice. This is a whisky that rewards slow sipping, offering a window into both Mortlach’s distinctive still style and Gordon & MacPhail’s solid cask selections. Well let’s get to the tasting so we can find out which one (or two) is right for you! And as always thank you for being Patrons and supporting this channel! I hope you enjoyed this review and please remember to drink responsibly. Cheers!
