Walabot DIY Imaging Device for Android Smartphones - Steve Sims (C) KWCH TV NEWS - This was captured from their website so please excuse the lower resolution. Enjoy the segment: Finding a stud behind a wall can be difficult. The Walabot, a wall scanner that connects with an app on your phone, claims it can detect wooden and metal studs, pipes, and wires four inches inside your wall! Steve Sims owns Wichita Fix It and gives 'Do It Yourself' tips on his own YouTube channel. He helped us put the Walabot to the test. "Looks kind of handy. Not much weight to it. Kind of feels like a phone case," says Steve of the product. We download the Walabot from the play store, and Steve attaches it to our phone with a USB cable and a sticky disc. For the test, we use a piece of drywall with various materials placed behind it. The goal is to see if the Walabot can detect them. We calibrate the product, and Steve uses the Pan mode. This gives him a broad look at what's behind the wall. "We see there's something in there, but we don't know what it is," says Steve. He switches to the image mode, which gives a digital image of what's behind the drywall, but Steve thinks it can be a little glitchy. "It's like it's not accurate with where it is," he says. We have a hard time locating the wire behind the wall consistently. The instructions say if you have trouble, recalibrate the device and try again. We do, and Steve thinks this fixes the issue. "If you're having a problem I would definitely recalibrate," he says. "Image mode" does allow Steve to see the pipes, wires, and studs behind the wall. He switches to "expert mode" and shows us the raw data the Walabot is collecting. Steve thinks this may be the handiest of the product modes. "I would say that would be more helpful," says Steve. He thinks the Walabot can detect a wire that we've placed just about four inches inside our frame. "It was accurate on everything that it says it's going to work on," says Steve. "It's just a little bit difficult when you're in the middle of construction to get your phone out, and start hooking things up to try find stud." So we ask, does the Walabot work? "Yes, it works," says Steve.
