Chris Dodd | " Spinifex Man” | Boneyard Sessions

Uncle Chris Dodd is a Dieri man who grew up on Wilyakali country in Silverton, a tiny historic mining town in far west New South Wales.  On this day we met on Kaurna country, just outside Adelaide, miles from the red sand creeks and silver salt bush of Silverton, but he is able to conjure the characters and stories of the desert, anywhere he goes it seems.   Uncle Chris attributes his love of music to friends and family that gathered to sing and tell stories a lot.   “Listening to my uncles singing and playing Slim Dusty, all the old people and everyone would come in from the stations. My older brother started getting into music and playing guitar, I just followed his steps, he was my mentor and the fella I looked up to.”A lefty, Chis taught himself to play guitar by watching other people, twisting his hands around a right-handed guitar turned upside down; the way he prefers it to this day.   He remembers a time when Silverton was busy with live music and lots of family and friends gathered around fires.“A lot of those things are just fond memories now, a lot of those people that gave me that inspiration have all gone, passed away, including my older brother.   “I guess as a result of my brother passing away, I wanted to record a lot of this stuff in story and song.” Uncle Chris has lived and travelled far and wide, including spending a fair amount of time with his wife’s community, the Pitjantjatjara people of Maralinga, in the Western Desert.     The 14 years he spent learning from and living with them gave him this song ‘Spinifex Man’.   Boneyard Sessions are filmed and recorded by Aimee Volkofsky of Bush Witch Productions www.BushWitchProductions.com.au
