Zoo Knoxville, formerly Knoxville Zoo, is a 53-acre (21 ha) zoo located just east of downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, United States, near exit 392 off Interstate 40. The zoo is home to about 800 animals and welcomes over 400,000 visitors each year. Habitats: Black Bear Falls Swimming, climbing and foraging are all favorite activities of black bears, and you may see a round of playful wrestling under way, too. All that activity can tire a bear out, so be sure to take a peek through the portholes into their dens to see if they are napping. Although bears slow down a bit in the winter months, Zoo Knoxville’s bears are active year-round. Boyd Family Asian Trek Enter into the wild, surrounded by endangered tigers, primates and cranes in this mysterious and surprising experience. With elements of adventure for guests and animal residents alike, Boyd Family Asian Trek will bridge the gap between curiosity and conservation. Chimp Ridge The chimpanzee troop often gathers at the viewing area in Chimp Ridge to have their breakfast and see what guests are up to, especially our youngster George. They also enjoy leisure time in their indoor courtyard, where they have an ever-changing offering of enrichment toys. You’ll see a lot of social interactions among the group, which includes some of Zoo Knoxville’s most dynamic individuals. Gorilla Valley Home to our gorilla family, including our babies Obi and Ubuntu, the Gorilla Courtyard is a favorite place for gathering. You’ll see a lot of interaction among the group, especially with the half-sibling youngsters, who become more adventurous and exploratory each day. Grasslands Africa! Go on safari to see some of Africa’s most iconic animals. See majestic African elephants enjoying their enrichment treats, or get eye-to-eye with the zoo’s rhino herd. Giraffe and zebra also roam together in Grasslands Africa. Reptiles Zoo Knoxville is home to one of the top reptile collections in the country, which showcases our conservation work with some of the most endangered species on the planet. Our reptile habitat includes ploughshare tortoises, radiated tortoises, spider tortoises and flat-tailed tortoises. It’s also home to the zoo’s oldest and most tenured residents, Al and Tex, the giant Aldabra tortoises. And, of course, there are snakes! The Boyd Family Red Panda Village Perhaps Zoo Knoxville’s most famous residents are the red pandas because we’re the top zoo in the world for the breeding of this endangered species. Red Panda Village’s aviary allows you to get an up-close view. Tiger Forest Tiger Forest is multi-acre habitat and breeding facility for critically-endangered Malayan tigers and white-naped cranes. Visitors will be transported to another time and culture when they pass the towering Shieh Family Pagoda and approach the Tiger Temple, where they will encounter some of the rarest animals in the world. Valley of the Kings Home to African lions and Hamadryas baboons, Valley of the Kings offers one of Zoo Knoxville’s coolest animal experiences: watching the animal staff training with both species on a special wall that allows guests to be part of the experience. 3500 Knoxville Zoo Drive, Knoxville, TN 37914 865.637.5331
