We're almost ready to get planting-just waiting on 11 more loads of seed, which could take 3 to 4 days due to a snowstorm in Montana. In the meantime, we're checking up on our potato cellars since it's been about a week. The temps are holding steady around 44°F, and most of the potatoes are looking great: firm, not shriveled or squishy, and with minimal rot. However, we did find one cellar with 2 feet of standing water near the humid cell-luckily, it hadn't reached the vent tunnel yet. We called in a pump crew right away to handle it. Overall, things are holding up well. The main issue this year has been one A-frame cellar where we can't use sprout nip since it's for seed storage. The rest of the cellars are looking solid, with good airflow and humidity control. We're growing Norcotas this season instead of Russet Rangers, aiming for fresh market quality with lower stacking and less bruising. One of our cellars even had potatoes removed early for fresh packing-not by the main processor, interestingly. Last year's problems with a rotten cellar due to a broken fan caused by a cat (!) are fresh in our minds, so we're being extra vigilant. Bottom line: storage is holding strong, the Fendt combine is fixed and ready, and we're getting close to putting this year's crop in the ground.
