A recent signing to the Brooklyn label with the acclaimed "Come Around And Love Me", singer Jalen Ngonda returns to the soul of the sixties, a golden period of the genre. Gifted with a sublime voice (its singularity evokes other legendary timbres such as Smokey Robinson's or reggae artist Horace Andy's), the singer takes over the local studio with “It Takes a Fool,” a spellbinding mid-tempo composition, accentuated by a live interpretation that leaves no room for error. “Rapture” is another particularly stunning piece that embodies the quintessence of soul, an authentic religious element coupled with instantly identifiable pop melodies. Finally, the single “Illusions” builds on the ambient dynamic with a warm tonality that takes on a confounding range here: highly recommended.
