📍Birmingham, Alabama🇺🇸 We didn’t expect this Alabama. Walking down the streets of Birmingham, we were floored by the architecture, some buildings echoing old Philadelphia or Boston, others taking us back home with cobblestones that felt straight out of England. Two guys on BMX bikes rolled past, sparking a conversation about life in this southern city. Then we stumbled across a peanut roastery that turned out to be a bar in disguise. A hard iced tea, a local IPA, and a couple of new friends later, we were deeper into Birmingham with one mission: our first ever American football match. Not NFL, but the USL, Birmingham Legion FC. On the way, we met a Louisiana transplant who told us why she’d built a new life here. Everyone we met seemed to love it. At the stadium, the differences to a Premier League ground were stark, smaller and quieter, but being able to drink a Twisted Tea in your seat while watching surprisingly good football was its own kind of magic. Craving atmosphere, we joined the ultras. The chants, the drums, the passion, it all kicked in. And when the final whistle blew, we were stunned to find fans invited onto the pitch to thank the players. Pure class. Even better, we grabbed a quick chat with the manager, who, unbelievably, was from Birmingham, UK. The city had everything a great one should: clean streets, packed bars, locals proud of their home, and none of the chaos people warned us about.
