Blue and Turquoise Abstract Cake Design

Tried a new technique to create a more abstract look. Not sure how I feel about the design but the cake was delicious! Top cakes were a vanilla sponge with a golden oreo crust and filled with vanilla buttercream. The bottom cakes were espresso with a traditional oreo cookie crust, and a whipped ganache filling. Note, this cake was about 11 inches tall and would classify as a "double barrel" cake. This means for serving, you would cut the cake horizontally, separating the cake into two, two layer cake, then cutting as desired. This 8 inch cake could feed up to 48 people a 1.5 inch x 1.5 inch slice. I made this for my coworkers so we each had one very long slice of cake. As someone is passionate about conservation and human rights, using sustainable ingredients is important to me. Fair trade ensures that farmers are paid living wages while also promoting environmentally friendly farming practices. Not many people know, but it is very common in the chocolate industry to use forced child labor to pick and sort the crop. Children looking to make some money end up thousands of miles away (often in a different country) working on a plantation where they are paid very little, if at all. In the early 2000's, the largest corporations in the chocolate industry agreed that child slaves would not be used or tolerated, yet child slavery still exists and is just ignored. In fact, Nestle was just in court due to child slave labor, but was not held accountable for these crimes as they didn't happen on US soil. Baking with sustainable ingredients is near and dear to my heart. I'm not perfect, but slowly I am taking steps in the right direction to share this message and end farmer exploitation.
