With this new field documentary I would like to invite you to follow us on the recent field expedition had in the Tsavo area in Kenya. This area is fascinating as the gem mining in taking place inside and around Tsavo national Park for more than 50 years. There Tsavorite and ruby miners and people in charge of conservation in Tsavo work together. Actually according to the miners despite the presence of animal like elephants who can damage mining operations, there are many benefits working inside a national park. In summer 2018, I went to Tsavo with my friend Dr. Cedric Simonet to collect some reference samples for the "Bahrain Institute for Pearls & Gemstones" (DANAT) reference collection. It was a true pleasure to return there, as actually Tsavo was the very first gem mining area I visited in Africa in 2005. To see there gem miners and wildlife side by side was something that amazed and and that I never forgot. On that expedition in 2005 I was also privileged to meet Campbell Bridges, the man who associated green grossular garnet with Tsavo proposing the commercial name of tsavorite. Sadly Campbell was assassinated in Tsavo in 2009, but I never forgot that discussion we had about gem mining and conservation and since then I'm doing my best to follow his steps and try to motivate people and companies active in the gem trade to support conservation. Actually a "conservation gem" just sounds right to me. Enjoy!
