President Donald Trump has softened his rhetoric towards Canada following his first phone call with the new Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney. In a stark shift from previous comments, Trump referred to Carney by his proper title and name, omitting the derogatory references to his predecessor, Justin Trudeau. The president stated that Canada has not treated the U.S. unfairly in trade, despite his plans to impose new tariffs on various trading partners, including Canada, effective April 2. Describing his conversation with Carney as “extremely productive,” Trump expressed optimism about U.S.-Canada relations, saying, “I think things will work out very well.” Carney, who has been vocal about the challenges posed by Trump’s trade policies, indicated that Canada may need to reassess its economic relationship with the U.S., citing a lack of reliability from America as a trading partner. In a recent campaign event in Montreal, Carney characterized the call as “positive, cordial, constructive,” and acknowledged that while progress was made, the discussions were just the beginning of negotiations. Both leaders agreed to engage in comprehensive negotiations regarding a new economic and security relationship following the Canadian elections on April 28. However, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to imposing tariffs, stating he would “absolutely follow through” next week. Meanwhile, Vice President J.D. Vance echoed concerns about Canada’s trade practices, claiming the nation has implemented "an unfair set of rules" against the U.S. As the political landscape shifts, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre suggested Trump’s softened stance may be a strategy to maintain the current Liberal government, which he claims has been advantageous for Trump's agenda.
