WHAT IS INJECTION LARYNGOPLASTY?

Injection Laryngoplasty(IL) is an extremely effective and easy method to manage the patients who have developed a breathy and hoarse voice following a unilateral vocal fold paralysis or paresis. A filler material such as hyaluronic acid is injected into the paraglottic space of the paralysed vocal fold to medialise the vocal fold. This closes the phonatory gap between the two vocal folds and improves the voice. IL is an office-based procedure, not requiring hospital admission, or stay. It requires local anesthesia. Thus this can be offered to patients who are elderly or are unfit for general anesthesia. IL can be performed percutaneously (via the neck) or trans-orally. A flexible stroboscope/laryngoscope is ideally used to visualise and perform the injection accurately. This filler material stays for 3- 6 months. For long standing (over 6- 12 months) permanent surgery - medialisation laryngoplasty is recommended. In the video, cricothyroid route is being performed.
