1979: Quite the Season Opener! WTVJ's Bob Mayer opened the 1979 season of his popular investigative series "Not On The Menu" by taking on a heavyweight: Joe's Stone Crab on Miami Beach. Forty years ago Joe's wasn't quite the icon it is now, although it was extremely popular and was a selling point in Greater Miami's tourism publicity campaigns. Following health inspectors Charlie Alexander and Ed Maltzman through the restaurant's kitchen, Mayer reports an initial mixed bag: Clean pots and pans, clean freezer, clean bar; nasty ice cream freezer, filthy fridge and dirty plates. Yick! A few days after the health inspectors and Mayer followed up on the initial inspection and found everything in tip-top shape.
