For generations, the Christmas star of St. Mary Catholic church has hung above the East Dayton neighborhood of Twin Towers. High above Xenia Ave., patriarchs of the parish have made the treacherous climb to hang the star. For nearly 60 years, this tradition has been passed down to the sons, grandsons and great grandsons of these families. Built in 1871, the structure is still solid but the climb to the bell towers is not for the faint of heart. To give you an inside look at the process, we asked Karl Williamson, climber and owner of Dayton's Urban Krag, to make the climb with a GoPro helmet cam. Three teams climb for this event, West Tower, East Tower and roof. Karl follows the West team. Prepare yourself for an elevated heart rate as you watch the climb get more narrow, steep and "dicey". Dayton Photographer Jay Woessner controls the cam from the ground. Produced and edited by Shelly Hulce and Jay Woessner. Big thanks to Steve Ross of DATV for providing support services for Shelly and Jay. See additional videos posted here with areal footage shot by Dayton photographer Andy Snow. Special thanks to the families of St. Mary Catholic Church for blessing the city of Dayton for generations with this beautiful star.
