The two main types of latex used in special Fx for movies are ‘slip casting latex’ and ‘balloon rubber.’ Cotton, is either unrolled from cotton balls or used off sheets of rolled cotton. However in Fx, these techniques are outdated. Silicone casting and 3D prints are the norm now. Balloon rubber is thinner and soaks into cotton much easier, but can be to thin when you want to build thickness and it can break down faster. And by fast I mean I have some decorations that have lasted years, but that the latex is a bit brittle. Slip cast is best for building up areas and is generally used for making masks. You may have heard it referred to as “mask latex” or have some variation of the number “407” in its name. Slip latex is thicker and is often poured into stone molds (plaster, or hydrocal molds work best) then after a skin forms, the latex is poured out and after the skin dries you have a latex mask. Cotton is purchased as balls or as rolled up sheets. Other cotton products like cotton squares or circle pads don’t work because they’re got a patterns or are glued together. Cotton balls are more tedious to work with but produce the same effect as rolled cotton. Rolled cotton is best for zombie props. Pre soak, or pre saturate the cotton with latex on a non-porous surface and then transfer that to you zombie prop. It’s easier to pre soak and apply than it is to apply and soak on the zombie. You’ll see it takes more latex to saturate so you’ll end up with all that extra latex all over your project and it will get sloppy so it’s best to pre soak on a flat area then transfer. #latex #halloweendecoration #halloweendiy
