Devshirme: How the Ottoman Empire Built an Army
Devshirme was the process for which a blood tax was performed by the Ottoman Empire where they taxed Christian Balkan families in order to provide boys from the ages of 8-18 to Janissaries, which were troops made up of criminals collected during raids. This would then result in a deprivation of rights until they reached the age of 40. The government failed its responsibility to protect its citizens. The parents lost their children and the children lost their rights. A documentary by Emma Brill and Avya Cramer.
