Cultural Cache Online Season 2: “Landscape” by Malang, with Giselle Kasilag

The second episode in the second season of Cultural Cache Online features a work by work located in the walls of the CCP Main Theater Lobby, made by an award-winning cartoonist, illustrator and painter Malang, with curator and writer, Giselle Kasilag. ABOUT THE ARTIST Mauro “Malang” Santos (1928-2017) was a painter. At the age of ten, he studied drawing under Teodoro Buenaventura. He finished half a semester at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts in 1946. He received a three-month scholarship from the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. He created Kosme the Cop (Retired), the first daily English comic strip for the Evening Chronicle in 1947. Malang, along with Elmer Abustan, Larry Alcala, Gat Gatbonton and Hugo Yonzon opened The Bughouse, a gallery exhibiting cartoons in 1955. He has held group exhibitions in Hong Kong, Honolulu, London, New York, Rome, San Francisco, and the Philippines. Malang consistently won in the competitions held by the Society of Philippine Illustrators and Cartoonists, which named him Artist of the Year in 1964. His works also won various awards from the Art Association of the Philippines from 1951 to 1963. Also, he received the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines award in 1963, Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan award from the city of Manila in 1981, and the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining award in 1994. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Giselle P. Kasilag (b.1974) is the co-owner of Project Art, Inc., an art and editorial consultancy. She also writes for various publications, and does research on a variety of topics ranging from politics to finance. She was a senior reporter for Business World where she won the first prize at the 1999 ANZCHAM Award for Outstanding Journalism.
