Heroic Story of Racheltjie de Beer (comparable to Hazel Miner) Racheltjie de Beer, a young Afrikaner girl born in 1831, is remembered as a heroine in South African folklore. At the age of 12, during a winter trek in 1843 from the Orange Free State to the Transvaal, she and her younger brother Dirkie became lost in the snow while searching for a missing calf. Realizing the danger posed by the cold, Racheltjie sacrificed her life by placing her brother inside a hollowed-out anthill, covering him with her clothes, and shielding the entrance with her own body.
