The islands of the Azores, which are in the Atlantic Ocean and technically part of Portugal, are becoming more popular as travel destinations for Americans. You can tell by looking at São Miguel, the biggest island, that the Azores are a volcanic chain of islands. The terrain resembles a mixture of Hawaii and Iceland. ⏱ Video Timeline ⏱ 00:00 Intro to the Azores 00:22 Sete Cidades Hikes 00:36 Ancient Aqueducts 01:01 Renting a Car on Sao Miguel 01:12 Hiking in the Azores 01:20 Sites on Sao Miguel 01:30 Cha Gorreana Tea Plantation 01:57 Hot Springs 02:40 Beaches The western part of São Miguel is famous for its hiking trails around a series of volcanic lakes, plus rocky beaches and natural pools. Plus the ancient aqueducts, built 500 years ago to bring water down from the mountains into Ponta Delgada, are now beautifully covered in moss and plants. In the central part of São Miguel, you can visit a historic farm, which the owners turned from an abandoned citrus farm into a vineyard. They offer free tours each afternoon, where you can learn about the variety of wines produce in the Azores. Nearby, you can stop at what’s said to be the oldest tea plantation in Europe. At Gorreana, they’ll give you a free tour of the tea-making process, but just as many people go to hike the famous Azores tea fields. Gorreana’s fields of sculpted tea plants are open to the public to explore for free anytime. The hikes in the Azores, and viewpoints, are accessible to visitors of all ability levels. The biggest challenge is planning your routes around the fog that rolls in! The only major sites you’ll have to pay an entry fee for are some of the famous Azores hot springs. Some of the hot spring pools are crowded and manmade, while others are more naturally-formed. Rental cars in the Azores are reasonably-priced, and São Miguel is very easy to drive around. In general, the Azores are becoming more people with American tourists, and it’s become easier for us to get there. Direct flights to Ponta Delgada’s airport (PDL) can usually be found from Boston, New York’s JFK, and Toronto. The islands are also a good addition to add to a trip to a big European hub, like London, Madrid, or Paris.
