The car drives a lot nicer (in my opinion) with a 1.5 tune and a manual transmission. With the automatic, we averaged roughly 33 mpg, and the best that we could get was 41 mpg. With the manual we average roughly 39 mpg in the (33mpg in the winter), and the best has been 49.7 mpg. Here are some threads on TDI Club that are good for research.
