The #DragonQuest series features some #Welsh references, including the Welsh accented character of Rydon in #DragonQuest8 and many other unique references to #Wales in #DragonQuest9. In Dragon Quest 9, the entire seaside town of Porth Llaffan feature citizens with a South Walian dialect. With no voice acting in this game, the localisers creatively spelled words how they are often pronounced in parts of #Wales, and include common Welsh phrases and words from #Cymraeg, the Welsh language. The sea god known as Leviathan is spelled with the Ll digraph that is commonly used in the Welsh language, resulting in the name Lleviathan, and could be pronounced in a Welsh style if the player understands this character in the Welsh alphabet. Story events in Porth Llaffan feature a man named Dylan Jones, who features two common Welsh names, and Dylan also plays reference to the Welsh #Mabinogion stories, where Dylan ail Don becomes a sea god himself. Tywll Cave likely comes from the Welsh word tywll meaning "dark", while the cuddiedig in Cuddiedig Cliff means "hidden". All of these locations are on Newid Isle, where newid means "change" in Welsh. Given that characters can change their classes (known as vocations in the game), this name could be a reference to that.
