IRAN WAR, First Days: Trump Extols US-Israel Action; Public Reactions Mixed | TRENDING

The joint U.S.-Israel war on Iran, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, began on February 28 with a barrage on targets including the country's capital of Tehran. By the end of the first day of combat, Iran's Supreme Leader, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had been killed. Iran quickly retaliated, aiming missiles and drones at Israel, U.S. military bases in the Middle East and other sites in the region, such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Over the course of the next several days, American and Israeli actions appeared to drastically reduce Iran's fighting capability, as demonstrated in a reported significant drop in such aerial assaults from Iran. Most, although not all, Republicans in both chambers of Congress voiced support for President Trump's decision to go to war. But many Democrats in Congress — along with members of their party and many independents among the public — expressed criticism of the action and concern about its possible effects.
