Welcome to Ekalvi Tamil – The Learning Channel for Every Student! In this video, we explore one of the most basic yet fascinating topics in Mathematics and General Knowledge – the concept of a “Year.” Do you know why we have 365 days in a year? Why every four years we add an extra day in February and call it a Leap Year? Have you ever heard of the term Jubilee Year and wondered what it means? In this detailed bilingual explanation (in English and Tamil), we cover everything about: Ordinary Year Leap Year Jubilees (Silver, Golden, Diamond, Platinum) This video is designed to help school students, teachers, competitive exam aspirants, and general learners understand the concept of a year easily and interestingly. 📅 What is a Year? A Year is the time taken by the Earth to complete one full revolution around the Sun. This journey takes approximately 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds. Since we cannot use fractional days in calendars, the system of Ordinary and Leap Years helps adjust this difference. 🌍 Ordinary Year: A year that has 365 days. 🌕 Leap Year: A year that has 366 days, with February 29 as the extra day. 📘 Detailed Explanation of an Ordinary Year An Ordinary Year has 365 days divided into 12 months. This type of year does not include February 29. Example: 2021, 2022, 2023 are all Ordinary Years. Calculation: Each year takes about 365.25 days, but we count only 365 days. The extra 0.25 days (¼ day) are carried over every year. After 4 years, 0.25 × 4 = 1 day → which we add as February 29. Hence, after every four years, we get one Leap Year. Rule to Identify a Leap Year: If a year is exactly divisible by 4, it is a Leap Year. But, if the year is a century year (ends with 00), it must also be divisible by 400 to be a Leap Year. ✅ Examples of Leap Years: 2016, 2020, 2024, 2028 ❌ Not Leap Years: 1900 (not divisible by 400), 2100 (not divisible by 400) ✅ Leap Years: 2000, 2400 (divisible by 400) 🗓️ Why Do We Need a Leap Year? The Earth takes 365 days and 6 hours (approximately) to revolve around the Sun. If we don’t add one extra day every 4 years, our calendar would slowly drift away from the actual seasons. Without Leap Years: After 100 years, our calendar would be off by about 25 days. Over centuries, months would no longer match the same seasons. Hence, the Leap Year system keeps our calendar synchronized with Earth’s revolution and the seasons. 🌈 Understanding Jubilees The term “Jubilee” is used to mark important anniversaries or celebrations after a specific number of years. It is commonly used for events such as weddings, schools, organizations, kingdoms, or reigns.
