For the first time, railway manager ProRail, rail freight operator Lineas and technical supplier Alstom have fully automatically operated a freight locomotive. On a shunting yard in Oosterhout, The Netherlands, we showed the locomotive start, drive, stop and react adequately to obstacles during a demonstration for media and rail relations. This milestone was possible after more than two years of research and testing. Fully autonomous The automatically driving locomotive encountered a person, a car and a train wagon on the track and a wrongly placed switch during the demonstration. The locomotive reacted fully autonomously and without the intervention of active staff on board. An intelligent obstacle detection and recognition system was linked to the Automatic Train Operation system (ATO), so that the train could drive and react independently at the highest degree of automation (GoA4, grade of automation 4).
