World Population Day, observed globally on July 11, aims to raise awareness of population dynamics and their connection to sustainable development, health, and human rights. In Rwanda—where over 70% of the population is under the age of 35—this day provides a strategic platform to highlight the central role of young people in driving transformative change. The Government of Rwanda recognises that seizing the opportunity presented by this youthful population requires targeted investments to harness the demographic dividend—a period when the working-age population grows larger relative to dependents, offering potential for accelerated economic growth. With 27% of Rwandans aged 16–30, Rwanda has a unique window of opportunity to develop a healthier, more educated, and economically active generation. Investments in education and skills development are critical to prepare youth for the evolving demands of the job market. Equally vital is investing in health—especially sexual and reproductive health—which not only accelerates the demographic transition through lower fertility and mortality but also supports a healthy transition from adolescence to adulthood. Despite Rwanda’s notable progress in education and health, many young people, particularly in rural and underserved areas, continue to face barriers to accessing quality, youth-friendly health services and sustainable livelihood opportunities. Youth unemployment, underemployment, mental health challenges, and limited preventive care are persistent concerns. This year’s World Population Day will underscore the importance of empowering youth to unlock Rwanda’s demographic dividend. It will spotlight inclusive, community-led, and cross-sectoral approaches to youth development, affirming that investing in health, skills, and economic empowerment is key to resilient families and sustainable growth.
