Zeitz MOCAA Centenary Celebrations

On 24 September 2024, Zeitz MOCAA achieved a milestone of over 5,100 adult and over 600 children visitors who joined the museum to enjoy our Centenary Celebrations! Marking 100 years of the Grain Silo and seven years as Africa’s largest museum dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora, the event coincided with South Africa’s Heritage Day, and the day's curated public programme brought together History, Art and Architecture. Various activations took place throughout the day throughout the museum space, offering local audiences an opportunity to reconnect with the museum as an accessible, social and culturally relevant meeting place within the Silo District, the V&A Waterfront and more significantly, Cape Town. Visitors enjoyed cultural performances, guided tours, art workshops, face painting, and more while enjoying the delicious offerings at the outdoor food court, courtesy of Makers Landing. The day culminated in a mesmerising performance by South African trumpeter and vocalist Mandisi Dyantyis at the Silo Concert which drew an audience of more than 2000 people. Originally built in 1924, the Grain Silo served as a vital component of Cape Town’s industrial landscape, symbolising the city’s role in the global trade network. However, with the decline of the grain industry, the Silo fell into disuse, becoming a dormant relic of the past. In 2017, this once-utilitarian structure underwent a remarkable metamorphosis, thanks to the vision of renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick. The Grain Silo was reimagined as Zeitz MOCAA, the home of groundbreaking contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora. The Centenary Celebration was a momentous occasion where art, architecture and heritage converged to ignite the imagination and enrich the soul of South Africa, while honouring the past and embracing the future. Zeitz MOCAA would like to extend our gratitude to the event supporters: V&A Waterfront, Bloomberg, Strauss & Co, Hazendal Wine Farm, Makers Landing, Sweet LionHeart,Thanda Choir, and Love Yourss.
