Poster against Christopher Dell, the outgoing US ambassador to Zimbabwe, (he predicted that inflation could reach an unprecedented 1.5 million percent within six months, triggering the Zimbabwean government's collapse.) STORYLINE: Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe threatened on Wednesday to seize and nationalise all retail outlets and manufacturers who did not heed a government directive to halt the increase of prices of basic commodities. Mugabe accused industry and commerce of "dirty games" aimed at ousting his government from power. "Let those in industry, those in commerce, those elsewhere, producers and retailers take note: the nonsense of escalating prices has got to come to an end immediately," said Mugabe. Speaking at the funeral of an army commander, Brigadier General Armstrong Gunda, Mugabe said his government would not hesitate to take over all companies that flouted the government's directive on prices. Gunda, 50, a former guerrilla commander in Mugabe's liberation army that gained independence from Britain in 1980, died when his car collided with a train about 100 kilometres (62 miles), east of Harare on 21 June 2007. Mugabe urged Zimbabweans to unite in the spirit of liberation to defeat the worst economic crisis since independence caused, he said, by economic sanctions imposed by Britain and its Western allies. Mugabe vowed price cuts ordered by the government on Tuesday will be enforced. Prices have been rising as wholesalers and retailers struggle to keep up with the falling value of the Zimbabwean dollar. The government has also threatened to take over mines and private businesses, and Mugabe claimed the mines were breaking the nation's laws by not channelling hard currency returns into state coffers. "We will seize the mines if they go wrong. Take note: We will nationalise them. We will take them all over if they continue this dirty game," he said. In Harare, some shops began dropping prices, with shoppers emptying shelves of goods that managers said would not be replaced unless suppliers also reduced their prices. Prices of basics have been sky rocketing as direct result of the hyper-inflation that Zimbabwe is experiencing - inflation was pegged at above 4 500 percent, the highest in the world. Foreign aid, investment and loans have dried up in more than six years of political and economic turmoil and worsening human rights violations.
