Dr Kedar Patil is quite often asked the question - "Is the bulge in my abdomen a hernia"? Not every bulge or lump in the abdomen is a hernia, according to Dr Kedar Patil. A Hernia is a clinical diagnosis. After a clinical evaluation by the surgeon, the next step is a sonography to confirm the diagnosis. 'What causes a hernia' is the next most common question. A hernia occurs when, on account of internal abdominal pressure, an organ is forced out of the abdominal cavity through a naturally sealed body opening. This can cause an umbilical or an inguinal hernia if it is near the umbilicus or in the groin respectively. If it is above the belly button it is called epigastric hernia. Lifting heavy burdens, straining because of constipation or chronic coughing can result in such hernias. A hernia can also occur through a weak scar or site of earlier abdominal surgery. This is known as an incisional hernia. Another common hernia is a Hiatus hernia, which causes acidity. Then there are some rare hernias like Spigellian and Obturator hernias. A hernia may be accompanied by an acute pain. This needs to be immediately shown to a surgeon as it could be a strangulated hernia and should be immediately treated to avoid serious complications and unnecessary, avoidable expenses.
