Side event held on 27th June 2025, at the occasion of the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council. Drug policies have been dominated by a punitive approach that has had devastating consequences for millions of people, particularly those living in poverty, belonging to marginalised communities, or affected by structural racism. In recent years, important developments within the United Nations have highlighted the need to adopt a public health and rights-based approach to drugs. At the occasion of World Drugs Day 2025, and in the context of the Support. Don’t Punish Global Day of Action, this event aims to take stock of progress made in fulfilling the right to health for people who use drugs through a harm reduction approach. The event will be an opportunity to identify opportunities for reform at national and international levels. Side event organised by the Permanent Representations of Colombia, Greece, Mexico, Portugal and Switzerland to the United Nations in Geneva, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, UNAIDS, the World Health Organization, the International Drug Policy Consortium, the African Network of People Who Use Drugs, Amnesty International, Dejusticia, Elementa DDHH, the Global Commission on Drug Policy, Harm Reduction International, the International Network of People Who Use Drugs and Skoun Lebanese Addiction Centre.
