She was lost following a collision with the SS County of Aberdeen on 24th April 1883, whilst en-route for Melbourne, Australia with a cargo of general goods. Only Captain Johns & the boatswain were saved from the crew of 27. The two survivors being picked up by the County of Aberdeen. The wreck of the British Commerce lies in a little over 51m on a flat shingle seabed, approximately 41 miles SE of the Needles. There are at least two large anchors visible towards the bow, a small donkey boiler midships & the remains of the steering position & rudder can be seen at the stern. The wreck is much opened out with the cargo of cement barrels, corrugated panels & copper piping being widely spread around.
