Pranay Lal’s Indica is one of my favourite books of all time, not because it is some riveting pop-science, but because it is a jaw-dropping feat of academic rigour. It is also humbling because it makes our short-time-span views of history seem so silly and irrelevant when you look at India on geological timelines. This particular story is straight from the book so please don’t ask me doubts about geology, plate tectonics and wind tunnels 😅 Also, weather patterns like rain are notoriously hard to nail down to one single factor, so for sure there will be other factors, but this just happens to be one of them Also, the evolution of the cichlid family of fishes of which the Karimeen is a member of has diverged over the last 88 million years (to put things in perspective, human agriculture is about 10,000 years old) between Madagascar and Kerala, so yes, for the pedantically minded, there is no Karimeen in Madagascar, but for sure, its long separated cousins are there!
