I purchased this old painted table for $4.99 from a local thrift store. It then sat in my garage for months, waiting for a much needed restoration. I did not find a maker's mark anywhere, but once I started working on the table, I discovered what was left of a bill of lading from the Southeastern Express Company indicating that this table was likely transported across the country by railway. Since this railway company was only in operation through the late 1920s, I now know this table is at least 100 years old. I spent the next few days disassembling the oak table; then carefully removed the layers of yellow, pink and green paint. After some minor structural repairs, I sanded the entire table with hand sanding blocks and power sanders. I then applied a traditional oil stain, hoping to match what I believe would have been close to the original color of this furniture piece.
