This Nuwara lake in the middle of the city which beautifies the city of Anuradhapura was known as Nakaravapi. It means the lake of the city. Nuwara also means city. This Nuwara Lake, which is the largest lake in the city of Anuradhapura, has occupied a very important place in the city even in ancient times. At that time, this lake was built not only to fulfill the water needs of the city dwellers. The beauty of the city and the entertainment of the city dwellers have also been attributed to it. There are several legends about the creation of this lake. There are many opinions about the king who created the lake and about the time. However, according to the notes written about ancient irrigation technology in this country, this lake was built in the first half of the first century BC. It is said that King Vattagamini (Walagamba). King Gajabahu the first and King Moggallana the second restored the lake. Most of the information about the construction technology of this lake has been mentioned in those old notes. It shows that the Nuwara lake has been done artistically and with high technology.
