We left Vik under a heavy gray sky, the kind of clouds that sit low enough to almost touch the mossy hills. The road to Þakgil was surprisingly busy for such a remote corner of Iceland—rental campers and jeeps kicking up mist from the damp asphalt. The rugged black cliffs on both sides made the drive feel like weaving through the spine of a sleeping giant. When we finally reached Þakgil, the valley felt like a hidden world carved out of volcanic rock, with green walls rising around us. We set out on the yellow trail, following its winding path toward Kotlujökull. The glacier shimmered faintly under the flat, muted light, its edges streaked with dark volcanic ash. The silence was immense, only broken by our footsteps on the wet ground. We continued to to hike to Huldujökull, but the weather turned thicker and harsher. A wall of fog rolled in so dense that the peaks and the trail disappeared into white nothingness. But it was worth the risk.
