This was for my fourth year final performance recital exam on 12 November 2025. Performed in Fismer Hall at Stellenbosch University's Conservatorium. Harp - Ricardo Hiniker Baroque Flamenco - Deborah Henson-Conant (1953 – present) Deborah Henson-Conant is a GRAMMY©-Nominated one-woman orchestra with electric harp, voice and a looper pedal that she layers sounds in real time, then weaves solo lines and vocals above it. Henson-Conant (known as the “Wild Woman of the Harp,” or “hip-harpist”) is a showman, entertainer and solid musician who has been compared to musical greats from Leonard Bernstein to Elvis Presley. Baroque Flamenco acts as a stand-alone one-movement harp concerto and is also the title of the 3rd movement from Deborah Henson-Conant’s Harp Concerto, “Soñando en Español”. Composed in 1994 and based on the theme of Minuet in A Minor by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Henson-Conant took inspiration and turned the theme into her most fiery and famous piece of music. She began with little improvisations on the theme, and the variations began to take on a Latin rhythmic character. The idea was furthered by Henson-Conant realising “the harp is just a big guitar”, and the soundboard, strums, and slaps were combined to create this fiery, fantastical, flamenco-inspired piece.
