Interdigital neuromas are notoriously difficult to treat. Research shows that interdigital neuromas do not get trapped beneath the metatarsal heads or deep transverse ligament, as previously thought, as Kim et al. (1) showed entrapment occurs beneath the proximal phalanx of the third or fourth toe. As a result, in order to be effective, it is important to distribute pressure away from the proximal phalanx where the entrapment occurs. Unlike metatarsal pads that needlessly reduce pressure directly beneath the metatarsal heads, the Peel and Stick IDN Balances support the second, third, and fifth metatarsal heads, offloading between the central met heads and bases of the 3rd and 4th toes, where entrapment occurs. This video reviews placement and discusses latest research regarding the development of interdigital neuromas. 1. Kim J, Choi J, Park J, et al. In 2011, Dr. Tom Michaud published a textbook entitled Human Locomotion that focused on examination, assessment, treatment and prevention of gait-related injuries. Dr. Michaud's textbook has sold over 15,000 copies and has been translated into four languages. Throughout his years in practice, Dr. Michaud has treated thousands of athletes and over time he's developed several products for exercise and rehab that are available on HumanLocomotion.com. The most popular product, the ToePro, is designed to strengthen the toes and muscles of the foot and ankle, and is an important tool for strengthening the toes (toe strength is the most important thing for balance as you age). Dr. Michaud's articles and videos feature topics that focus on rehabbing injuries such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, and peripheral neuropathy, and most recently maintaining balance, agility and strength for fall prevention.
