As concern grows about a slowdown in the rollout of renewables, outgoing Clean Energy Council chief executive, Kane Thornton joined The Business from the sidelines of the Clean Energy Summit to discuss Australia's progress on reaching 82 percent of renewables by 2030. He says while the amount of renewable energy has doubled over the past five years, more than 40 per cent of Australia's energy is now coming from renewables, and Australia essentially needs to double that again to meet the 2030 target. He says that means accelerating the rate of rooftop solar installations, building wind farms and big batteries around the country. But just four years away from Australia's ambitious target, politicians are continuing to debate dumping net zero, and governments continue to approve big carbon emitting fossil fuel projects. Mr Thornton, who has spent 15 years at the Clean Energy Council, with 10 years as chief executive, says a personal frustration of his has been the political "bickering" and "silly politics" that has been a distraction from the complex energy transition that requires "laser focus". Kane Thornton's comments come on the same day Australia's energy minister Chris Bowen announced the government will boost its capacity investment scheme by 25 per cent to underwrite more new clean energy projects. #ABCBusiness Subscribe: http://ab.co/1svxLVE Read more here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07-2...
