Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp. About the story: Kurt Meyer was born on 23 December 1910 in the small German town of Jerxheim, then part of the German Empire. He came from a working-class family. His father, who had also served in the German army during the First World War, was a miner, and his mother worked as a midwife. The Second World War started on 1 September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. At that time Meyer commanded an anti-tank company taking part in the campaign. Allied reports later accused him of personally shooting fifty Jewish civilians near the fortress of Modlin. The violence of Poland set the tone for Meyer’s conduct throughout the war. By October 1939, he transferred to the motorcycle troops of the Leibstandarte. The following year he took part in the German campaign in the West and was promoted to SS-Sturmbannführer – an equivalent to Major. He assumed command of the reconnaissance battalion of the Leibstandarte and fought in the invasions of both Yugoslavia and Greece in 1941. On Sunday, 22 June 1941, Nazi Germany, under the code name Operation Barbarossa, invaded the Soviet Union, its former ally in the war against Poland. Kurt Meyer and his battalion marched east as part of this campaign. Almost immediately, his unit earned notoriety not only for combat effectiveness but also for atrocities. Villages were burned, civilians were executed, and terror was deliberately instilled. One German officer later recalled that Meyer bragged about burning down a village near Kharkov in Soviet Ukraine and murdering all its inhabitants.
