This beautiful bit of nature is made all the better by visiting Vrelo Cave, just a short boat ride away. Should you travel to North Macedonia, definitely allocate a half day to this beautiful location. The easiest way to get to Matka Canyon is by driving yourself, but if you are like me and don't like to drive then you can easily find a driver to take you there and back to the city. We paid our driver 30 Euros which we felt was very fair for the service. Matka Canyon is about 18 km away from Skopje city center. The boat ride to Vrelo Cave takes about 15 minutes each way and is 400 denar (about $8 USD) round trip. The cave isn't too big and you can see everything fairly quickly. However I was in awe and just found myself staring at random parts of the cave structure the entire time. If you are visiting Skopje you would be doing yourself a disservice by skipping out on a visit to Matka Canyon. There are a few cute restaurants inside the canyon, but the prices are a bit much in my opinion. Rather, I suggest getting food at a restaurant in Matka town about a 5 minute walk from the entrance to the canyon. Or, just save your appetite for one of the many fantastic restaurants in Skopje.
