Hornbein on the History of Climbing on Longs Peak

American alpinist legend Tom Hornbein (1930-2023) describes the quest for climbing the Diamond on Longs Peak and his own trip climbing just the top of the Diamond (1951) before the complete first ascent in 1960 by Robert Kamps and David Rearick. He talks about local prolific climber Dale Johnson and the park's ban of climbing on the Diamond. Recorded on one of Tom's daily hike and scrambles at the age of 88 by Mike Whelan and Erik Murdock of the Access Fund. Hornbein was one of the Estes Park and Boulder climbers in the 1950s who pioneered big wall climbing. He later went on to be the first American to climb Mt. Everest by a new route, the West Ridge in 1963. The Hornbein Couloir on Everest is named after Tom.
