Places to see in ( Cannes - France ) Le Monastere Fortifie The fortified monastery is a building located in France in the municipality of Cannes in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is built from the end of the xi th century by the abbey of Lerins on the south coast of the Saint-Honorat island in the bay of Cannes to protect the island, the monastery and its occupants. The building has been classified as a historical monument since 1840. It is towards 400 - 410 , that Honorat and Caprais , retired on the island of Lérina, already mentioned by Pliny the Elder , with the agreement of the bishop of Fréjus , Saint Léonce. Around 732, five hundred members of the community, including the abbot, Saint Porcaire, are massacred on the island during a raid of Saracens . According to tradition, one of the few survivors, Saint Elenthère rebuilds a new monastery on the ruins of the old. It is likely that the abbey is temporarily abandoned until the departure of the Saracens of Fraxinet , in 973 . This Saracen threat did not disappear afterwards because the Vita d'Isarn, abbot of Saint-Victor de Marseille, quotes an attack on the Lérins abbey in 1046 . The abbey is looted and several monks are brought into captivity in Spain. The tower is enlarged from a larger building to the east and the primitive tower is lined on three sides with medium and large blocks with rustic bosses. In the absence of texts describing the different phases of construction, these must be found by reading the different parts of the book. There are therefore differences of appreciation in the phases of construction given in the article of the Archaeological Congress of 2010 and that of 1932. In 1932, Robert Doré describes a construction in two campaigns of this enlargement, starting with a tower to the south -is then this tower was enlarged to the north for a second campaign that lasted the last quarter of the xii th century to the first half of the xiii th century. In the 2010 Congressional article, the authors admit that the construction of this enlargement was done on its entire surface but that it had to be completed by the southern part where the appearance of the masonry seems to indicate two distinct campaigns . From 1390 , it is in the chapel of the fortress that the monastic professions of faith take place. TheJanuary 20, 1392, the relics of saint Honorat come from Arles are deposited in the tower. The Holy Cross Chapel is dedicated onSeptember 14, 1392. The chapel became the holy of holies of the abbey as indicated by an inscription of the xv th century. In 1787, the abbey is secularized for the benefit of the Bishop of Grasse. She counted then only 4 monks. The Saint-Honorat Island and the monastery are bought in 1791 by Jean Alziary de Roquefort. His daughter, the actress Marie-Blanche, known under the name of Sainval, resides in the fortified monastery until 1817. Her heirs sell in 1830 to a trader of Vallauris, Jean-Louis Sicard. They then become the property of an Anglican pastor, Rev. Henry Smith Belmont, which began construction in Cannes in 1854 , the castle of La Bocca , now destroyed.
