Chris Chan and the Hero’s Journey: The Philosophy of the Lolcow (CWC [1/2])

In a world where the media is more immediate than other people, people are beginning to define themselves by what others do for them (e.g., fandoms) rather than what they do for others (e.g., social roles). This shift is now reflected in the characters in the media, who instead of following the will of a higher authority to achieve their purpose through a Hero’s Journey, they follow their own fallible will, and some of them even create their own reality to fulfill the needs that the media has created for them. This new kind of story, called the “Zero’s Journey,” features a protagonist, may that be Chris Chan or another lolcow, who becomes deluded by fantasies of fame, fortune, and/or pleasure, and who, through becoming a public spectacle (via the internet), succeed in achieving some of their goals, but fail to discern why they feel even more alienated than before. This video is the first of two parts. In the second part, we will conclude the Zero's Journey, which, unlike the Hero’s Journey, ends with our protagonist trapped in the special world, rather than returning to the ordinary world they came from. We will also meditate on how the worship of heroism has begun to vanish, while the idolization of the anti-hero (e.g., “literally me” characters, Jeffrey Epstein) and the indulgence into cringe culture has become so widespread.
